Rest In Peace Kevin

My motorcycling friend Kevin Martin passed away suddenly this weekend. Rest in peace Kevin, we are going to miss you. Mark, Mike and I are going to try to finish what you started. Kevin is happy guy in the blue-green Rebos t-shirt beside the cone above. Photo is from the Baxter Open House in Marne last August.

Getting Ready

In order to keep this blog motorcycle specific - I'm really getting psyched up about the upcoming International Motorcycle Show coming up in the Twin Cities and about Green Bay winning the Super Bowl the next day. In preparation of this auspicious weekend, Bergie and Frump concocted a new batch of micro-brew, some of which I'll be taking with me to enjoy with some friends over the weekend. This batch, our third, is another kit brew. It's a lager and like the prior batches, it is very, very good. I'm not sure what we are doing right, but we need to continue doing it. I'll post some photos next week.

Cool new retro bike - Ural Solo T (sT) Concept

Basically a new, old school, air cooled BMW R71, but a URAL. The sticker is under $7K and at that price it is going to be hard to beat even by the most frugal. I really like the looks of the customized version from Bar-Design with the big tires, bobbed fenders, headlight and new seat - that thing is just cool.

2011 Glacier Lakes Motorcycle Club Grand Tour Announced

Rallymaster Sleddog announced the 2011 Grand Tour rules yesterday on the GLMC message board. After some initial questions and quick proactive rule changes, the following is the current rule list. Also there has been some discussion the last few months about sending out flags a little earlier this year. This is a great reason to get out and ride and visit some new places. I'm really looking forward to it again.

You will be looking for town names that have something to do with water.

The 2011 Grand Tour will run from April 1st-September 15th, 2011

1) Polaroid photos, digital prints, or standard photos are all acceptable. Photos may also be submitted on CD or on SD card. Photos may not be emailed.

The following paragraph is a suggestion only, NOT a rule
If you are using a digital camera, it would help if your photos are shot at the lowest resolution possible (640 X 480) It makes scoring thousands of photos much quicker. When submitting them on CDs consider putting them in Alpha order & include a spreadsheet.

2) To be considered a finisher you must accumulate 25 points. You will then earn a Grand Tour shirt and entry into first level of prizes.

3) Riders with 50 or more points will get the shirt and entry into the first and second place level of prizes. Riders with 75 or more points get the shirt, and entry in the first, second and third level of prizes. Prize levels increase at 25 point increments. This is not to say that the prizes get any better at each level, only that you will be entered in more of the drawings and have better odds of winning multiple prizes.

4) The Rider with the most number of points will win the grand prize of a 200 dollar gift certificate to Aerostich Riderwarehouse AND entry in every drawing. Rider with the second highest number gets a Helmet and entry in as many of the drawings as they qualify for. Third Place will win a prize too.

5) Only the following words & spelling, are acceptable to be used in town names. Town names must start or end with one of the words.

Bay, Bays, Brook, Brooks, Cove, Coves, Creek, Creeks, Fall, Falls, Harbor, Harbors, Hydro, Hydros, Lake, Lakes, Ocean, Oceans, Pool, Pools, Pond ,Ponds, Rapid, Rapids, River, Rivers, Sea, Seas, Spring, Springs Stream, Streams, Water, Waters.

6) Town names must be on a building, or a sign that is attached to the building. No city limit signs, No water towers.

7) Three things MUST be in the photo. 1. YOUR rally towel. 2. A significant portion of your bike. 3. The town name must be on a building, or sign attached to the building. Everything must be CLEARLY readable in the photo.

8) Signs with arrows pointing the direction of the town or miles to the town are not accepted. Even if it is on a building.no arrows allowed.

9) All entries & photos submitted must be mailed to Jack & Marlene Backer, 26537 450th Ave, Monroe, South Dakota 57047 Photos sent elsewhere will be ignored. We must receive them or they must be postmarked prior to or on September 15th 2011 at the latest.

10) Your numbered rally towel may only be used by you. No one other than you may possess your towel. If you find a towel at a location, LEAVE IT THERE. The owner will most likely be back for it.

11) Dont Cheat

12) If you lose your towel, send in your current photos and $10.00 for another towel. We won't ship out your new towel until these items are received. Any photos sent in with the old towel # after this won't be accepted. If you find your old towel later, DON'T USE IT! Only photos with the new # will be accepted.

13) Entry fee is $25.00

14) Almost any way that a town name is identified on a building is acceptable. Painted, Etched. We are just looking for the name to be on buildings

15) Town names may only be used ONCE. Even if the same name is used in many states, it may only be used ONCE.

16. Some signs are in places that it is not safe to park your motorcycle. We understand this and will allow up to 5 photos to NOT include your motorcycle. Park your motorcycle in a safe location and walk to the sign instead. Your towel must still be in the photo.

There are some new spy photos claiming to be of a new Triumph Trophy, one with big engine, big fairing and a shaft drive. Also rumors of this new engine going into a new Tiger. Very interesting.

Jimmy John's - Not very impressed

Not really a motorcycle or travel topic, but I finally found my way into a Jimmy Johns here in Sioux City. This chain was really popular with some people so I decided to stop and grab a sandwich to take back to work after I finished running some lunch time errands. What a disappointment.

White bread only, no choices, no toasted bread, boring cheese, confusing setup, and it feels really, really rushed. I don't need stress on my lunch break and I like having at least a few minutes of downtime to reflect on the day. The sandwich was too chewy, tasted like they piled on the salt, included only mayo, and was a pretty darned boring sandwich. Reasoning I can make better sandwiches then this, I was totally unimpressed. I think the reason Jimmy Johns is so popular here is it is new. I give them three years before they fold up and leave town. Meanwhile I'll be sticking with Subway, Blimpies, and Quiznos.

August Update

Well, Leta and I have been busy riding again this month. On Saturday, August 14th we left Sioux City about noon and made it to the Husker Rally in Franklin Nebraska in time for the evening meal. We missed this rally last year and were happy to make it, even if for one evening. I had been pretty sick early in the week so I wasn't too excited about going, but Leta convinced me to go and I'm glad now we did. By that Sunday afternoon I was feeling 100% again. We picked up 9 more GLMC Grand Tour photos on the way home. We had about a 650 mile ride and the weather was great.

The following weekend was Baxter Open House. Some things came up late in the week and I couldn't leave until Saturday morning. After a club breakfast at the Black Bear diner, I road down to Marne with my buddy Al. We had a nice ride. Rally attendance was really down this year (like most of the Rally's were this year). The weather was really difficult with temps near 100 and humidity almost as high. I hadn't planned on drinking any beer, but it was simply too hot not too. Blue Moon and Grain Belt Nordeast were served cold over a campfire (Kathleen T from Omaha's candle light formed our fire as we didn't have any wood). Jeff S. and I enjoyed some camp fire cigars and the Autobahn riders were there so we had a lot of fun camping. I also got to see Ryan and Stan, and the Sioux City garage builder crew of Kevin, Mark and Mike. We left early Sunday before the bike show because we could not handle another day of steaming hot weather.

Since Leta wasn't able to make it to the Baxter Rally we went for a ride Monday evening, August 23. We decided to pick up some more Ton's for the GLMC Grand Tour. We also got to ride a few miles with Prez Johnson and his wife Jan on their nightly scooter foray in Canton.


Great news!! Last night I finished repacking the muffler for my K1200RS (Dagmar) and took it over to Chuck's place. Chuck was been working on getting Dagmar all ready to ride again. I now have relatively new transmission, clutch, 55W HID low beam, brake fluid, coolant, front shock/spring, rear shock/spring, fuse block and ground block, new exhaust packing, and removed the carbon canister. I recently put on new tires and changed the oil. I got to ride Dagmar to work today and she is running great. I'm really excited about having her back and really appreciate everything Chuck did. It would have taken me forever or a lot of $s to do this done by myself.

I got a new phone today (Droid X) and was saving my photos off my old phone. Found this one of L enjoying a beer in the beer tent in Redmond, OR at the BMW MOA National. During the day the beer seemed awfully good, as the temperature at the rally fluctuated from near 100 during the day, and about 40 at night. It was a dry heat though, yeah right.


I also snapped this one last evening of an incredible sunset as I was leaving HyVee. The cell phone camera really doesn't do it justice. It was raining off the the southwest (blurry red area in lower left). Had I only been out on the bike and had the Cannon S1 with the wide angle lense with me, hmmm.

K1200RS Transmission Repairs Started

Last weekend, my friend Chuck saw a K1200RS transmission on eBay with a buy it now price of $300 located in Norfolk, NE, about 80 miles from my home. Chuck is a pretty good mechanic. At his encouragement, I took my K1200RS and Clymers manual over to his house where he had recently obtained a motorcycle lift. Over the next 3 or 4 days, Chuck tore my bike down quick to find the problem. I was pretty busy and was not able to help. Chuck determined the transmission output shaft splines and the clutch plates where completely worn (as in nearly gone on the clutch plates).

I have had various problems with clutch and transmission ever since the dealer tried to resolve some broken seals on the bike when it had about 20K on it back in 2005. Over the next few years, a gear shift indicator was fixed, two clutches were replaced and a shift problem was resolved. After 65K and the second clutch, the bike was having problems at times shifting. After initially arguing that the problem couldn't be duplicated, the dealer finally agreed there was a problem, but explained to me that probably wasn't that bad and that if I had him tear into it while under my extended warranty and just wearable parts were worn, I would be responsible for labor and parts. Its a very expensive job, so I stupidly let my extended warranty expire without taking the bike back. I figured I would ride it until the clutch completely wore out again.

In late April this year the bike finally failed on the on ramp to Hwy 20 near home. The engine sounded fine, but when in gear it sounded like gravel had been thrown into it. I trailered the bike home and put off doing any additional repairs. I was thinking about trying to take it apart and fix it myself this fall.

Back to the top of this story. On Wednesday evening Chuck called with his diagnoses. We figured replacing the transmission was a lot easier then trying to fix it. Chuck contacted the eBay seller and got his contact information. Thursday afternoon I called the seller and made arrangements to visit that evening and take a look at it.

At about 6 PM Thursday, Chuck and I took off for Norfolk on a road trip to visit this Todd Dickie of PowerSportsNation.com. When we got there we found 3 K1200RS transmissions. Todd said we could have any of them for $300. They all looked good, but we picked the cleanest one with the best splines. Todd told us that bike had 1600 miles on it, so we basically got a new transmission for $300.

Iowa Girl Hits 5 Deer In One Year

Maybe a new record, but a girl in Conrad, IA (<- link to article... Is "What's Up" still in Conrad?), has hit five deer (we assume different deer) within a one year time span. Our corn-fed Iowa deer are becoming pretty dangerous. Not to be out done, one of my co-workers has had two different collisions with deer this year.

Our 2010 Summer Vacation Ride & Darth Vader GPS (funny)

L and I got home safe, but worn from our summer vacation last night. The family pets were very excited to see us. We spent eleven days riding to and from the 2010 BMW MOA International Rally in Redmond, OR. With nearly 10 days traveling in the saddle and just a little over one day at the rally, we were able to ride some of the best roads and even found a couple new roads to add to our favorites list. There are lots of photos; we spent a lot of time with old friends and made a few new ones, and we did battle with a plethora of weather and mechanical elements. I will post a day-by-day trip report and some photos in the next few days. It will be good.

Stan's Last Ride as a Free Man

Our good riding buddy Stan S. is getting married next Friday (June 11th) and we are very excited for him. We were going to have a ride for him, but the weather did not cooperate. Instead at the last minute we changed the ride to a get together down at Mac Behrs. Susie whipped up a special cake for Stan. I got him a practice pillion rider so he could practice riding 2-up (Steve L. had to inflate her, no one else seemed to be able to figure that out). Stan also got some beads to use for whatever he wanted. Jim said Mari, the wife to be, had him no strippers, but Jim ignored that advice and bought a couple of them for Stan anyways (in 16 oz cans). It was a nice party. Stan is sure excited about getting married.

Brewing Beer

Not motorcycle related, I spent late Saturday afternoon and early evening at Dave's as we tried to figure out how to make beer. Here is a photo of Dave stirring our first batch of "Burgfechtel's Perfectal Indian Pale Ale". The whole process was reminiscent of how to get a Flux Capacitor operational using 1885 technology.
